Rod Murrow began his legal career with a large Kansas City-area insurance defense litigation law firm immediately upon graduation from law school. While still in law school, Mr. Murrow was already handling both bench trials and jury trials after being selected as one of only six law students to prosecute criminal cases in the district attorney's office. After graduation, Mr. Murrow's trial experience was applied to personal injury cases, automobile accidents and commercial, business and construction litigation.
Mr. Murrow opened his own practice in 1996. He represents both plaintiffs and defendants in litigation as well as advising individuals, businesses and nonprofit organizations on legal matters outside of litigation. Mr. Murrow conducts jury trials and bench trials in Kansas and Missouri in both federal and state courts, as well as handling all appeals in those jurisdictions. He has a passion for and commitment to working on behalf of developmental disability community service providers and assisting those with developmental disabilities lead full, productive lives.
At the same time he started his own practice, Mr. Murrow was invited to teach employment law seminars for one of the nations largest seminar companies. He traveled throughout the continental United States, from New York to San Francisco and Minneapolis to New Orleans, teaching businesses and organizations how to comply with employment laws. The topics covered included illegal discrimination (race, age, sex, religion, national origin, disability), sexual harassment, the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), employment-at-will and its exceptions, employee policies, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), hiring and interviewing procedures and techniques, and many other topics. Mr. Murrow was one of the top-rated speakers teaching for the seminar company and produced training videos as well. Mr. Murrow still provides training to his clients and other businesses locally and continues to use this knowledge and experience to help his clients prevent legal problems from ever occurring.
For small businesses, nonprofit corporations and other organizations, Mr. Murrow basically serves as a cost-effective legal department for organizations which are too small to maintain their own in-house attorneys the way large corporations do. These services include complying with a wide range federal and state laws and regulations, employment laws, wage and hour compliance, drafting, reviewing and litigating non-compete, non-disclosure and non-solicitation agreements and all other business contracts, handling mechanics liens, corporate formation and maintenance, and many other services. Mr. Murrow provides these services by drawing on his litigation experience to help small businesses and other organizations prevent litigation wherever possible, including using alternate dispute resolution methods such as mediation. When litigation cannot be prevented, Mr. Murrow aggressively pursues a successful outcome to that litigation.
Mr. Murrow also handles a variety of automobile accident and personal injury cases. Regardless of the type of case, he knows that all cases are important to the people involved. He handles small cases and cases which have received national attention, and gives each case his full attention and commitment to helping his client achieve the best possible result.
Mr. Murrow is married and has two young daughters. He grew up on a small farm. He is a former competitive distance runner and ran cross country and track in college. His hobbies include running, reading, hunting and fishing. He and his family are active members of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Lenexa, Kansas. He is a member of the board of directors for the Hospital Hill Run in Kansas City, a third-degree member of the Knights of Columbus and serves on several committees at Holy Trinity and in the community.
